Instances

Learn what instances are in Legatics, how they work, and why they ensure secure, tailored access for different organizations and regions

Updated this week

Instances are separate installations of Legatics. Each instance is tailored to meet the specific needs of customers, such as regional compliance or organizational preferences. This guide explains what instances are, how they work, and how you interact with them.

Note:

  • Unique URLs: Each instance has its own specific URL for access

  • Separate accounts: You need a unique account for each instance

  • Matter visibility: Matters in one instance cannot be viewed or accessed from another instance.

If you're interested in a private instance, speak to your business development (new customers) or engagement representative (existing customers)

Multi-tenant instance

This is where a single instance serves multiple customers (ie "tenants"). Each tenant accesses the application and its functionalities as if they were using it in isolation, even though they share the same underlying resources and infrastructure with other tenants.

Users are “pooled” within an instance. This means that a user can log in and access all of the matters stored in the instance that they’ve been invited to (irrespective of the customer who is hosting the matter).

Data within the instance is stored in fixed locations. Each customer’s data is separated.

Private instance

This is where a single instance serves one customer. This isolation can enable more control over the environment.

Users are still “pooled” within a private instance. But, with only one customer on the instance, users will only be able to access that customer’s matters. They will need to log into other instances to see matters hosted by other customers.

Data within the instance can be stored in any AWS region (except for GovCloud and China).

Note: There are times when it's advantageous to have multiple customers on a private instance

Frequently asked questions

How do I find the instance that hosts my matter?

Check the email invitation to the matter. It contains the URL of the matter.

Does the location of my instance affect who I can invite to a matter?

No. Legatics is designed to allow global access irrespective of the location where the instance is stored.

Example: Your instance is stored in Australia. Anyone from around the world can be invited to matters in your instance.

How do I know what instance type stores my Legatics customer environment?

Go to the account page in the Admin System. It's listed there.

I’m a current customer on a multi-tenant instance, can I migrate my matters to a private instance?

Not currently. Talk to your engagement manager, and we can discuss.

If I move to a private instance, can I later migrate my matters to a multi-tenant instance?

Not currently.
