Once the binder has been generated, it’s ready to be exported and shared. Exporting allows you to save the binder file to your chosen destination, which will include the binder index and the documents that were part of the binder at the time of generation.
Prerequisites: You need to have the view or edit binder permission
How to export
Press the Export button at the top of the binder.
You’ll see a drop-down showing:
The type of file you’re exporting (eg zip or single PDF)
The export destination (your computer or iManage/NetDocuments - if you have those integrations on)
Press Export to save the file to your export destination.
Note: The export file type is fixed to the format chosen when the binder was generated. If you need a different file format, the binder will need to be regenerated.
Troubleshooting
Export button is inactive
Generate the binder. The export button will be inactive until you do.
Warning icon on export button
If you see a warning icon next to the binder, it means the binder in Legatics has changed since the file was last generated. Hovering over the icon will explain that the binder file you can export is out of sync with the current binder contents.
This might happen if documents were added or removed, sections were renamed, or other binder settings were updated.
If you’re not the one managing the binder, you may want to contact the matter admin to have it regenerated before you export it. This ensures the exported file reflects the most up-to-date version of the binder.
Zip file won't open or extract
This usually happens because you've saved or extracted the zip file to a long path (like C:\Users\JohnDoe\Documents\Legatics\Matters\2025\). Windows, for example, has a maximum path length limit of 260 characters. To reduce the likelihood of this error happening, Legatics limits file lengths in zip exports. You can learn more about path length limits here.
To fix the issue, save or extract the zip file to a folder with a path less than 53 characters (like C:\Users\JohnDoe\).
Hyperlinks in index of zip file not working
This is because the zip file hasn't been extracted. Hyperlinks in the index rely on the files being in the correct folder structure. If you're viewing the index directly inside the zip file (without extracting it), those hyperlinks won’t point to the right location.
To fix the issue, right-click on the zip file and choose Extract All and view the index file from the extracted folder.
